Tennis Academy Overview by Head Coach, Simon Bentley

The Tennis Academy at Shrewsbury this year has been packed with a variety of students from complete beginners through to National standard players. I believe this year has had the highest number of elite players in Discovery Summer’s history.

Training consisted of technical and tactical drills covering all the major shots, match practice and video analysis. At the end of every week a group tournament was held. The results are as follows;

Trinity Graded Examinations in Spoken English

At Discovery Summer Shrewsbury we offer the opportunity to take Trinity Graded Examinations in Spoken English (GESE). Trinity College London is an international examinations board, fully accredited in the United Kingdom as an independent awarding body. The Trinity GESE is a series of 12 progressively graded examinations designed for speakers of other languages. It sets realistic objectives in terms of listening and speaking with English speakers. Each grade contains a range of interesting subjects and linked vocabulary, grammar, lexis and function that the students use to improve communication skills. The 12 grades provide a continuous measure of linguistic competence and take the learner from absolute beginner (Grade 1) to full mastery (Grade 12).

In 2011 we entered 32 students in examinations ranging from Grade 4 up to Grade 9. All of our students passed, well done!!!

Extract from the Shrewsbury Business Journal

Students of DS Shrewsbury 2011 assisted police with a murder investigation on Saturday Night. Mr Sirius Sidney was found dead in his office in Shipley Manor on the family estate.

Mr Sidney was discovered by his business associate Ms Antonia Ashton on Saturday morning. He was last seen the night before at a family gathering in the nearby Alington Hall.

With the assistance of D.I. Crispin Kingsland and Prof. Horton Mince Crabtree, the students gathered evidence and interviewed witnesses.

Weeks 2 and 3

It's been very, very crazy the last 2 weeks at Shrewsbury. Over 230 children have been participating in the English-Multi Activity and English-Sports and Dance Academy programmes, so free and quiet moments have been few and far between. We're now moving towards the end of week 3, with just 1 more full week to go.

Christ Church, Oxford

Luckily we've been blessed with mostly fine, warm and sunny weather which has made for a good atmosphere on campus and some fantastic excursions. This week we have been to the wonderful Bliss Hill Victorian museum nearby, and to the wonderland of Alton Towers theme park where students and staff both enjoyed the adrenaline spills of Nemesis, Oblivion, Rita and co. Last week we ventured down south to Oxford and also to the beautiful walled Roman city of Chester.

Casino Night

The social calendar has been as jam packed and fantastically run as ever by Activity Leaders. In week 2, Blind Date arrived at the Ashton Theatre for a smooth re-enactment of the 90s TV show. Last Monday, the Alington Hall converted into a makeshift Casino with both staff and students dressing in style, and other nights have involved an army themed commando night, mini-Olympics, a Scottish Ceilidh and various challenge nights. The weeks have been rounded off by a Tuesday Presentation and Disco night with lots of tears and goodbyes at the end as new friends prepare to jet off to distant parts of the world on Wednesday.

Finally, we should mention the students that have been taking Trinity Oral Exams - everyone passed last week, some even with distinctions, so we can definitely say that the children are learning English when they're here! A big well done to all the students and staff involved.

Adventure Sports
All the adventure sports students were awarded with a certificate to mark the end of week 1. As part of the adventure sports academy, students spent three days off site at the Edge adventure centre (http://www.ridetheedge.co.uk/) doing activities such as mountain boarding (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mountainboarding), quad biking, and archery. While on campus the students were taken for basketball, volleyball, hockey and swimming.

Workshop Presentations

'Classy' front cover

Aswell as having English skills lessons at Shrewsbury, the students also have to pick workshop activities. These are separate to their skills classes and they are encouraged to work in different groups to create something to present to the school, such as a music video, travel guide or TV programmes, in an effort to use the new language they have learnt. This week we have also offered them the chance to make, design and edit a magazine. The result was a very feminine "Classy", and a more travel orientated magazine, "The Travelling Artist," and these were shown to the rest of the students on Tuesday's presentation evening.

Features included the most popular songs amongst students at Shrewsbury, fashion advice, and a section on some of the boys on campus! Other articles talked about travelling to the various countries where the budding journalists come from, and the latest Harry Potter film.

All in all, an absolutely fantastic effort, well done boys and girls! We'll upload some more presentations next week.

Score- Discovery Summer VI 4-3 Meolebrace Under 14’s

After 2 days of intense preparation the team were well prepared and looking forward to their pre-arranged match. Although the intense rain seemed to concern a number of players the game went ahead, and conditions improved for kick off. A strong team was selected to start the match in a standard English formation of 4-4-2. However, my instructions to the players were to attack in numbers, this was evident in the opening minutes when both full backs Jordi and Kaan pushed high up the pitch to create the width. The first 25 minutes were very one sided, with our midfield controlling the tempo of the game, moving the ball quickly and picking out very penetrative passes. Jean and Giovanni continued to trouble the opposition's defence with good footwork and speed, with Serge and Phillip producing moments of brilliance when in possession of the ball. Dominance of possession soon turned into goals. Phillip, the tall blonde headed Austrian, produced a real Captains Performance by scoring 2 well placed shots from 18 yards with his weaker left foot. The first after a mazy run past 3 defenders and the 2^nd after a neat ½ with Giovanni.

The 2^nd third differed from the first, the team failed to defend in crucial areas and the opposition punished us by scoring 2 goals in quick succession. One a penalty and another from the 6 yard box.

After words of encouragement at half time, the team found themselves in a precarious position. A disastrous start to the 3^rd period saw a well placed finish from the oppositions number 14. The team was behind for the first time in the match. However, team spirit prevailed and a dubious penalty decision, given for a foul on ‘William,’ followed by a slight bit of simulation from Sergi on the 2^nd phase gave Discovery Summer a lifeline to get back in the game. Sergi, who was having a fine game, stepped up to take the spot kick, missed but coolly slotted in the rebound. The team continued to go for a fourth goal and were rewarded with a great finish from ‘William’ inside the penalty area. The job was nearly complete. I instructed the team to go more defensive, sured up by clever defending from Jules and Phillip the team held on for a fantastic 4-3 victory.

All the players were excellent on the day, with superb performances from certain individual players like Phillip, Jean, Sergi, and Giovanni.

We had a great excursion in Birmingham yesterday, which included a visit to the Think Tank (an interactive science museum) and shopping trip in the Bull Ring.

An action packed first week at DS Shrewsbury!

Learning to play cricket

We're well under way at Shrewsbury, and have had an action packed first week with the 130 students or so that are currently here on both the English-Multi Activity and the English-Sport and Dance Academy courses. Fine weather for the most part has dominated, enabling the students to get out and explore this beautiful, wonderful and huge campus with their new friends. Cricket, lacrosse, yoga and adventure sports are just some of the activities that have been taking place.

Victory in a 'Do or Die' Challenge

The Social team have devised a highly entertaining afternoon and evening programme to help the students settle in and get to know each other. 'Deal or No Deal' and 'Do or Die' have been amongst the highlights so far, and the students have responded with infectious enthusiasm and plenty of amusing and well spirited participation. 'Do or Die' in particular was well received by all, with a knockout quiz competition enabling certain students to escape the incredibly, and increasingly, messy challenges which were great fun to watch!

All the students are now involved in their English classes and workshops and we look forward to some of their presentations on Tuesday evening. Workshop options include making a music video, composing a travel guide, making a campus news programme and magazine writing. We will post a selection of the presentations on the blog over the coming weeks.

We went on a half day excursion to Shrewsbury yesterday (Friday), and tomorrow (Sunday) everyone will be heading to Birmingham, to the Think-Tank science museum in the morning, and the Bullring Shopping Centre in the afternoon.

Trevor Hill asked his students to pretend that they were leaves falling from a tree. Then he asked the leaves to write farewell letters to the trees. Later on, students made friends with real potatoes. Just as they got to know each other, Trev asked them to return their potatoes and write poems about their friendship. Discovery students showcased their work in an evening filled with dance, music, shadow puppets and English tales.
The Shrewsbury dance academy produced a dazzling performance to entertain their fellow students and Shrewsbury staff. Everybody was impressed by the performance, especially as it had been put together by the dance students in such a short space of time.
One English class enthralled the audience with a trip around the world using shadow puppets. Using artistic and visual aids they took a trip to Egypt, London, Hollywood and Italy.

Football academy triumph in local derby!!!

The football academy triumphed 2-0 over a local rival team. Playing against an experienced and practised set up, the discovery boys were resolute in defence and ruthless in attack. Goals were scored in each half and victory was assured by the extremely competent skills of the discovery goal keeper Quentin. Excellent efforts by all team members - Well done boys!! Best of luck for Saturday.

Every summer school that I attend I am always surprised and delighted by the wonderful mix of nationalities, talents and personalities on campus. It is always a real pleasure to spend the summer with so many entertaining young people. This year has been no exception.

So far this year the young people have enjoyed social events including 'Deal or No Deal' with the lucky winner receiving a 'whole' chocolate bar for their courage under duress. Last night the brave students undertook the 'Do or Die' challenge and got to grips with cold spaghetti. custard and tricky British quiz questions.

English classes and workshops have got off to a great start with students creating music lyrics, shadow puppet performances, magazine articles and exploring the local history and landscape.

Hopefully the sun will shine for the entire summer, and we will continue to have such a good time.

These wonderful shots of our football programme in action show the excellent level of hard work during training and matches against English teams....A Brand New Feature of the Discovery Summer Football Programme 2009. During our first game the Discovery Summer team won 4-1 in a very convincing performance with Carlos Sanchez Petyo Rumen and Mark Chepilev featuring on the score sheet! Well done boys!

Our second match was incredible with the team losing 1-4 at half time. A strong team talk, some quick formation changes and some much needed "elbow greece" and the team came back 2-4, 3-4, 4-4 in the dying minutes of the game. A straight penalty shoot out saw the team losing 5-7 but an excellent come back in normal time. Well done boys!

Overall a fantastic four weeks and some excellent football played with awards for Players Player, Coaches Player and Sportsman of the week given out to the worthy winners!Congratulations to every player and watch this space for the DVD that will be uploaded inthe near future featuring live action from training and matches!

We're having a great time here in Shrewsbury!

It's a busy camp with 2 courses running and around 170 students taking part. Everyone seems to be enjoying themselves and it's great to hear so much English being spoken.
