Excursion to Chester

Chester was founded as a Roman fort named Deva Victrix almost 2000 years ago which is a Roman name for river Dee. It has the best preserved walled city in Britain.

According to legend, a prehistoric Druid temple existed on the site of Chester Cathedral. The relics of St Werburgh were brought here to protect them from the Vikings.

There is medieval woodwork in the quire, where the monks held their services.

Much of Chester’s architecture dates from the Victorian era. It is based on Jacobean half timbered style named from James VI & I.
